Look Out Amex, Here Comes The Visa Black Card…Now With Carbon Fiber

We received word of a new kid on the block from Visa, and that is their new black card, made out carbon fiber.  The card is available from Barclay’s Bank, and is only available to 1% of U.S. residents.

While you’d think this is a direct competitor of American Express’s  Centurion Black card ($3,000/year fee and must spend over $250,000/year), it’s actually in more of a competition with Amex’s Platinum card.  The new Visa Black Card has an annual fee of $495, includes the following privileges/benefits:

  • 24-hour concierge service
  • Exclusive rewards program
  • “Luxury gifts” – Not sure what this means, but sounds good :)  It says that members will receive luxury gifts from some of the world’s top brands.
  • Travel lounge priority pass – Gives you access to more than 500 airport lounges
  • Rewards program that provides 1% cash back or points
  • The card is made of carbon fiber (they call it carbon graphite)
  • Limited membership

Right now Visa is offering 0% interest on balance transfer for 6 months. The-BlackCard.com has got some unboxing pictures of the card in person, as well as some comparisons to the Centurion

The card in the pictures seems a lot different than the promo picture that Visa is using.  It seems like you can’t really see a carbon fiber pattern.  The-BlackCard.com mentioned that it feels and bends more like plastic. Here’s a commercial for the card from Visa:

The Visa black card isn’t nearly as bad as some of the complaints I’ve heard about it. the feel is pretty nice; likely nothing like the Amex – which I’ve never seen live, of course – but substantial. I happen to like it. The fee isn’t high for those who are meant to have the card…it is a bit of a luxury item, after all.

The whole concept is genius. Charge nearly the same fee as the Amex Platinum card, offer a small taste of what Amex card members get, and let them think they have a special “black” card… I think my next business venture will be in the pre-paid debit card industry and offer a “BLACK CARD” that is prepaid…I’m sure people will buy it to flash it around. I mean, people are buying demo/expired/old Centurion cards off Ebay for $100+ every day…

Now the “Visa Black Card” comes with special “Carbon Fiber” to feel cool so people ask the cardholder about it so the cardholder can feel special or draw attention to themselves. People with real Amex Centurion (black cards) typically don’t draw attention to themselves. Yes, the cards were made out of an anodized titanium (anodizing a substance increases thickness to save money by using less titanium) but there are plastic ones out there and still available. Again, this is the typical Centurion card member that isn’t flashy…but there are a few that aren’t. And those are probably the same people that would get the Visa Black Card because their inner child is screaming “look at me… look at me mommy!”

Now, before I get hate comments, I am not jealous or angry at Amex…nor am I conceited or elitist/snooty… I’m very down to earth and am humble. I had a personal platinum card for years and was offered the Centurion Card without application or asking for it. A box arrived one day. Yes, the card was cool and when I called Amex I wasn’t sure I wanted to pay the onetime enrollment fee…largely because the benefits between platinum and centurion were not worth the onetime fee but I changed my mind once my travel patterns changed and increased and the benefits started to make sense.

    Peace,
