Everything is explained here. They used a wet carbon prototype for show that is heavier than dry carbon. The wet carbon will not be used in production because "obviously there's no win to it"!

Chris, you sound like you work with or at Seibon. If in fact the purpose of the build was to generate attention and demonstrate the quality of their products, they've done a horrible job at it by increasing weight on a subject car that is created with a primary goal on decreasing weight for agility and performance. This setup cost over $10k and you're saying that someone would have to pay more money for a correct application of carbon fiber? The only thing demonstrated is that you're putting more money into Seibon's pockets and more weight onto your car to look fast while not actually being fast.

I actually saw all of Seibon's cars a few weeks before SEMA and asked about the weight savings on the Smart and the Elise. The weight on both increased. These cars were built to generate attention and demonstrate the quality of their products. Seibon DOES manufacture dry carbon parts. Most people aren't willing to pay for the dry carbon and a company has to cater to their customers. Jackson, your information may be a little old. Seibon actually owns several factories. Some of their newer parts they test out are farmed out to other factories but for the most part they manufacture it all themselves.

Its part fiberglass man! thats why its heavier. Seibon doesn't manufacturer their own stuff but just private labels. I know =) . A lot of the stuff out there is a fiberglass/carbon mix and not 100% which will be a bit lighter.

Simple. The Elise is already a very lightweight car. They are replacing lightweight fiberglass skin with (relatively) heavy wet carbon for the looks. The skin isn't structural, so it isn't necessary for it to be strong. Thus, a thin veneer of fiberglass does the trick, and (from the pictures) thicker CF parts are both unnecessarily strong and heavy. Really, a silly use of the material.

What's to follow-up on? Siebon makes crappy knock-off products from poor-quality wet CF.... of course it's going to be heavy. Siebon is for poseurs so why would they worry about what it weighs?
