Back in March we wrote about Oakley possibly making carbon fiber sunglasses since they were messing around with the material. Now it looks like we have some confirmation, and it sounds like they are going to be extremely high-end. Oakley released a teaser view for their carbon fiber sunglasses which boasts the following info:
- Over 20 hours of CNC machine time
- 80 layers of carbon fiber
- 96 mans hours for one pair
Those are some impressive numbers, we’re dying to see these things! In the meantime, check out the cool video from Oakley which shows some neat production shots:

Wow, I can’t believe those numbers:
* Over 20 hours of CNC machine time
* 80 layers of carbon fiber
* 96 mans hours for one pair
20 hour CNC at say $50 hour = $1000, 96 man hours at $15 hour = $1440, so without material costs its $2440 with a mark up to come. So a RRP of around $5500?
Also 80 layers is a lot of carbon, even if it was made out of thin layers (150gsm) it would be 12mm thick.
Where can you get a pair, Oakley has some on their site, but I doubt the $179 is the real deal.
Anything you see for that price on their site is carbon fiber “look”. These real CF glasses are part of the new Oakley Elite line of which the first release was the “Pit Boss” that retails for $595.00
Their right here. Lance Armstrong wore them on the last day of the TDF. Thay are called the “C6″. Rumor is they’ll be between 2k-4k depending on materials used. Metal/Carbon, Full carbon etc…
