Justin, one of our Carbon Fiber Gear readers, gave us a heads up on a custom carbon fiber GSX-R 1100 show bike for sale on eBay…we took a look, and it was so unique (aside from being in the Kanye West “Stronger” music video) we had to write about it.
While Rory Craig designed and developed a carbon fiber baby seat for a class at the Art Center College of Design, Hanz Mortiz designed and built this custom Gixxer for a senior project at the same scool. Hanz is now the Director of Design at Oakley. It features a 1989 oil-cooled GSX-R 1100 engine (1200 cc) with a Wiseco kit. Besides the OEM 89′ wheels and swingarms, everything else is custom.
The entire frame, seat and tank were formed from the same piece of carbon fiber to help strengthen it up. This dropped the total weight down to 350lbs from the stock weight of 462lbs. It also has custom rearsets, triple, levers, reservoirs, lights, LED accent lights, and a ton of custom aluminum bodywork done by Linq Designs.
The bike has never been registered, so it will be considered a 2009 model if you register it. It already has a California custom blue VIN # assigned to it. The bike went around the show circuits, and made numerous appearances.
The bike also has some cool pop culture history behind it. It was featured in Kanye West’s “Stronger” music video (I’m assuming it’s one of the bikes around the 1:12 time frame which I’ve embedded to the bottom of this post). It was also in the Power Ranger’s TV show “Karmen Rider Dragon Knight”.
To see all the pictures and get all the info, check it out for sale on eBay. The “buy it now” price is set at $14,500, which seems like a pretty good deal to us. It’s a lot less than the $160,000 all carbon fiber Ducati 999S at least! Hans, isn’t it a bit suspicious that Justin’s last name is never mentioned in the article? He is obviously hiding that he stole the design from you. Who wouldn’t want to take full credit for such a bad-%&$ bike?

Do you still own the bike? Was it sold?
This bike was built by Hans in my shop in 1995. I machined the aluminum details and an employee handformed the aluminum belly pan. Linq designs and this justin are full of crap. Check out the sportrider issue as noted by Hans June 1996.

Note:
all the other bikes noted apear to be metallic frames with carbon coverings. The Bike above has a carbon fiber/ epoxy frame with aluminum only in the details Ie forks, engine, triple clamp, swing arm. The frame was only carbon fiber which made this creation special to this day!!!

This bike was built by Hans Moritz while a student of mine at Art Center College of Design. I was the FIRST PERSON to RIDE it! I might add that ride was down the hall and out the door of the ACCD shops way past midnight!
The bike has no metal frame. It is true monocoque (sp?) Gas tank is integral. It is very stiff and can be pushed hard. It’s stylized riding position is ultra aggressive and limits the performance and rider duration, but the structure does not limit it.

Hanz and Dale were gracious enough to allow me to build one for myself from his mold in exchange for my metalwork. Ironically the same has been happening to us with “our” product line by öfficials from the world drift series china no less..

Justin brought this bike to my shop for some extensive aluminum repairs on the destroyed lower valence impacted by the street many times when it came down from wheelies (or so i was told). I rebuilt and sectioned the lower valance and changed some mounting points and added others. This Justin was short on cash at the time so I offered my work for free in exchange for advertising as I realized how unique this bike was and it was sure to catch everyones eye. I havent heard from him since. Then I stumble upon this article. I believe Hanz contacted me by phone and I explained this to him (or at least someone who identified themselves as an employee of Oakley.) Linq Designs does not claim to have anything to do with the original design or building of this bike. So to Hanz and Dale, you gentlemen did a spectacular job is designing and building this bike and as a designer/builder myself, my hat is off to you guys.
