Speedplay 19 Gram Carbon Fiber Water Bottle Cage

You’ve already got the exotic carbon fiber bicycle, with the mindset of reducing weight as much as possible right?  If that sounds like you, you’ll be interested in Speedplay’s new carbon fiber water bottle cage:

Speedplay Nanogram carbon fiber water bottle cage

They call is the Nanogram Ultra Light cage, and it only weighs in a 19 grams.  Even with its light weight, it’s very strong because of its unique design.  It’s made from unidirectional carbon fiber, and positions the water bottle stop at the top of the case rather than near the mount where it’s most vulnerable.  It’s designed specifically for a road bike, and can absorb the repetitive impacts of rough roads with ease.

Don’t ride a road bike?  You’re in luck, Speedplay also makes a standard version of the carbon fiber cage that weighs in at just 27 grams, but can handle a mountain bike or a behind-the-seat triathlon position.

Both carbon fiber cages include lightweight aluminum fasteners and a BPA-Free Nanogram logo water bottle.  The MSRP on both cages is $65 USD.

Cube’s Carbon Fiber Collapsible Bicycle Concept

So, let me tell you a little bit about myself, now that I have joined the Carbon Fiber Gear family, I am the absolute complete opposite of Dave. While he is the technology and gadget lover, I like things to be a bit simpler. My philosophy is ‘if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it’ and I always stick to the originals. This next product, however, has me quite intrigued seeing as I live in a tiny apartment just outside of crowded Washington, DC. It is a collapsible bicycle by Cube called the Urban Street Concept Bike (USC).

Cube collapsible carbon fiber bike concept

A student at the University Coburg/Germany, Gregor Dauth, designed the USC. Dauth based the idea of the USC off the Swiss Army Knife. There is a central hub located just behind the handlebars, which the bike collapses around, folding small enough to fit in the truck of a Smart car in just a few steps. The frame of the USC is made with carbon fiber, allowing the bike to be so lightweight (17kg).  The USC was first debuted at the Eurobike Convention in 2007.

Urban street concept folded

Unlike other folding bikes, the USC is loaded with goodies! It has front and rear disc brakes, LED lights on the brake levers, which automatically switch on when it becomes dark, 28” wheels for added comfort over city terrain and an internally geared 8-speed hub. While the majority of the response on the USC has been positive, some people are not happy that in order to fold the bike completely up, you must take the wheels off. Others were unhappy with the bikes weight, 17kg and that there is no place to store daily office gear, water bottles, etc.

While there is no information on a release date or a price, I will keep my fingers crossed for you :)

C2 Collapsible Carbon Fiber Surfboard

With the Smart Fortwo introduced in the US this past January, the iPod Nano in everyone’s backpack and everything else getting more and more compact, it was only a matter of time before someone took it to a completely new level. Nicholas Notara designed a collapsible surfboard whose frame is made of carbon fiber.

Notara carefully designed the board to maintain the balance and weight of a traditional surfboard. The surfboard breaks down and becomes half its usual size with the help of a quick release level and flipping two pins. The board can also adapt to the rides needs with its swappable fin system.

While the collapsible surfboard is not a new concept, Karl Pope first conceived it for Pope-Bisect in 1964 and dubbed it the ‘Travelboard’, Notara’s carbon fiber board has been receiving a lot enthusiasm from the surfing community. The only concerns voiced have been those of cost, loosing the pins or fins, and the board of metal pieces heating up in the hot sun and burning the skin.

While the board is a beautiful example of great design, it is unfortunately just a concept at this time.

Oakley A Frame Carbon Fiber Snow Goggles

After a fun weekend of snowboarding, I thought it would only be right to post some sort of carbon fiber snow gear up. This time up we’ve got the Oakley A Frame carbon fiber snow goggles:

Oakley carbon fiber a-frame snow goggles

If you can’t notice from the picture, these are actually carbon fiber styled, and not real carbon fiber. They still look great, and the A Frames are a good snow goggle. Oakley developed a three-tier defense system against the coveted fog that we all hate on goggles. They have surge ports that control airflow, there is also a F-3 series anti-fog treatment, and a dual lens design that reduces fog by creating a thermal barrier of trapped air. All to keep your eyesight clear. The lens is available in 3 colors, VR28 (pinkish), black iridium (shown above), and persimmon (orangish). You can find the carbon fiber styled version of the A Frames on eBay for about $90-$100 shipped, here’s a list of the latest auctions for your reference:
