The internet was abuzz today (at least in my circle of geeky websites) with a new viral video from the Hydraulic Press Channel. Yup, a YouTube channel dedicated to crushing stuff under thousands of pounds of pressure using none other than a hydraulic press. You’ll find all sorts of crushing videos from a golf ball to a roll of duct tape. While those are all entertaining, the most recent upload is what interests me as they crush some different types of carbon fiber pieces:
You’ll see some carbon fiber tubes being crushed, and then finally a thick carbon fiber panel. The interesting thing about the tubes is that while they are being crushed, the remainder of the tube stays in-tact:
The carbon fiber panel pretty much came out unscathed. Finally, they ended up driving a metal nut into the carbon fiber, but even then it only went through and we saw maybe a couple layers get delaminated.
